We grew Jerusalems for years, in staggered rows, 4 rows deep, right across the bottom of our vegetable garden, not so much for the tubers but as a windbreak. They grow very tall and were extremely effective at cutting down the prevailing South Westerlies as they came in off the sea and whipped across our land. We planted them to provide temporary protection until our newly planted hedging had matured. Worked a treat. Didn't have to replant them every year either - we just left them in the ground, removed the previous year's growth each Spring and left Nature to get on with things. The tubers were interesting. I didn't think they had much flavour but enjoyed their crunchiness. However, the FL word was a major thumbs down for me so I don't eat them anymore. After all these years, we still get them popping up, still in the same location.

Another scorching hot day up here so far. We had a fantastically hot day yesterday - not a breath of wind so the sun burned, burned, burned. Hubby's scalp is hot pink! I just go brown, thankfully. I spent the afternoon on the sun lounger, embroidering, tall glass of Pimms No1 at hand. Can't think of a better way to spend my time. A hugely satisfying barbecue with chilled beers and dining al fresco finished off the perfect day.

The only work I have lined up for today is to wash my kitchen window as the cat has recently taken to balancing on the very narrow window sill and tapping the window incessantly when she's hungry... or more often just for the hell of annoying me. Blooming cat! She's even by-passed my Anti-Smidge Devices. Blooming clever cat! Now if only she was clever enough to tackle the mouse population around here, she just might earn her keep, instead of just waving hello to them as they trot into my house with suitcases and relatives in tow.

Off outside to enjoy my morning coffee.

Wingers, over & out
