Good evening,
Pam, as soon as those garden plots get tilled, I will be right there beside Nira, asking you to send your rain our way. Our latest forecast pushed the soonest rain out until next Tuesday. Of course, our forecasts are known to change without much notice. It was hot again today. It has cooled off nicely, and the peepers are going nuts out there, so it feels very much like a summer evening.
I do my house stuff a little bit at a time also. I guess we all do. Late afternoon, I decided to get going on another cookbook project. I have been reading all these church/community fundraiser cookbooks, flagging recipes that I think are interesting, with the intent of compiling them in another cookbook. I don't have space for all these cookbooks. I can't imagine how I would ever find the recipes again. I realize it is a bit odd to put together a cookbook of recipes, most of which you haven't ever made, but might like to try some day. I suppose it isn't different than copying out recipes, or clipping them from magazines, collecting them from friends, etc. Perhaps I won't share this one. Laughing. On the other hand, I do believe that people offer tried and true, favorite, recipes to these fundraiser cookbook efforts.
On a whim, I searched on-line for cookbook software. I did the last one very manually. There are software packages out there. I thought they were rather affordably priced. I did a free trial run with two of them. They are not what I am looking for. They are more about having your recipe collection on-line. Right at your fingertips. You get thousands of their recipes and can load in your own, in a rather prescribed manner for the one. I understand why. That is so you can pick your recipes for the week and it will make shopping lists for you. The other was not so restrictive, and you could print out a book of recipes. You just had to accept their formatting. Okay, so what am I really looking for? I want the flexibility to rearrange recipes and not have to redo the table of contents and index. It occurred to me that MS Word will do that, if you have a clue what you are doing. So I spent a little time teaching myself about table of contents and indexing and I think I have it figured out.
I figure the more complicated that you make it, the more there is that can go wrong. I am willing to give it a go. I only have 3 recipes typed in so far. I think this is going to be one "interesting" cookbook. My first recipe is for Jalapeno Poppers. I don't even like hot peppers. But other people do. Perhaps, we will have so many from the garden plots this summer. It calls for BBQ rub, so I have that recipe also, in case anyone wants to make their own. Those were from a Salvation Army, teamed up with Omaha BBQ Association, cookbook. I find that many of the recipes are the same throughout all these cookbooks. Yet, there are fascinating regional differences. Next up is Sauerkraut Salad... served cold. That is one from a Jewish Sisterhood in Illinois. I have seen that in several cookbooks and think it worth trying. (Perhaps only once, time will tell.) Southwestern Cheesecake? Seems like more of meal side dish or pot luck offering than a dessert. Toasted Almond Stuffing? I would think that is more for pork chops or chicken breasts or beef rolls than a turkey. The last two are from a Baptist Church in KY.
I suppose that I should get organized for work tomorrow. Waving hi to those who might pop in later!
