I think carrots are one of the easiest veg to grow. Mine are grown in clay loam and do superbly well. I don't bother with thinning out - I just use a stick to run drills from one end to the other, about 5" apart, then take a generous pinch of seed and just dribble them in quickly. I let them grow wherever they land. Some land together in a cluster, some evenly spaced - I don't care, I just leave them to it. As they grow they find their own space and grow out against each other. The only thing I do ensure is to grow a row of onions either side of the carrot drills to outfox the carrot fly - has worked every time to-date. I used to grow the little round carrots when they first came onto the market and sowed those in module trays, 7 seeds to each module, same with beetroot. They did very well like that.
