I googled this the other day and found some interesting answers... some suggested using alcohol, others recommended nail polish remover, washing up liquid... mayonnaise apparently doesn't work. One car mechanic mentioned Bug and Tar Remover and uses it in his workshop. He also did say that you need to remove pine tree sap as soon as possible and not let it dry on as it does eat through the wax and eventually paintwork. Once you have removed it, he recommended a good layer of wax on the car.

How about just covering the car? You can get specialised lightweight fabric elasticated covers for them, not sure where from but I have seen them - much better than risking damaging the paintwork.
