I thought it wouldn't volunteer this year, but I was wrong. I have two plants happily growing and I left them where they sprouted, so this is in the
border. Actually, it is a nice accent plant at this point. After it is done blooming, I'll cut it back. If you haven't grown borage, it's a
bit of a treat. The buds and blooms taste a bit like freshly picked cucumbers and I've used them in salads and as a pretty garnish. The leaves are
hairy and a bit prickly, so if some folks are sensitive to that. The flowers are small and drooping, but a gorgeous electric blue!
It's very easy to grow from seed and the bees love it, as does some bug that put holes in the leaves! That surprised me a bit because of all the hairs. I originally started it in the garden from seed sown in a tray, but planted it out shortly after it had gotten it's first set of true leaves. I have read that it doesn't like being transplanted, but being that small didn't seem to affect it adversly. It likes a lot of sun, like most herbs do, and I did have to stake a couple of stems because of the weight of the flower clusters. It got leggy toward the end of the season and I cut it back. I did leave a few flowers for seed and let it self sow. It does have a tap root, which is why it doesn't like being disturbed.
