I have a niece who is 4 years old. Late last summer she was popping yellow plum tomatoes into her mouth. I asked if she would like to grow her own tomatoes
next year. Yes, please! Okay, I shall send some seeds! Yes, please! And what color tomatoes did she wish to grow? Yellow ones! Obvious choice. (Mrs G
and yellow pear) And what other color tomato would she like to grow? (at this point my brother interjected they had to be small tomatoes due to space
limitations, would have to be grown in pots, FYI he does have the gardening gene also)..... Orange tomatoes! Those are nice! (Sungold seeds collected from
tomatoes from plants shared by friend whose mother grows so many heirloom tomato plants she doesn't know what to do with them). What other color tomatoes?
Red tomatoes! (Fox Cherry) and what other color tomatoes??? Oddly enough she said white tomatoes! My brother was trying not to laugh.. .giving me that...
you brought this on yourself look! White tomatoes? White cherry tomatoes? Who ever heard of a white tomato? Kids say the darndest things! Stop while you
are ahead! What are you going to do with that one?????
I just grinned. Oh, white cherry tomatoes, sure we can do that! That would be Snow White Cherry tomato.... I had already been promised some seeds. Thanks Dan!
I am not sure what color she would have picked next.... my brother suggested that was all they would have space for.... I could have covered green, pink, purple, black... anything but blue! Are there any blue tomatoes???
I won't send her the package with seeds, seed packs for starting, plant markers, etc until February. I rely on my brother to provide grow mix. and perhaps will go visit and help get them started. Just wanted to be sure I had her seeds set aside for her......gathered up pics off the internet of all the varieties so she can see what she is growing.... never too soon to encourage the gardening gene! Because it is fun! And she is a natural. When I went to carve pumpkins with them before Halloween, she had something clenched in her fist and wouldn't use that hand... so we asked what that was.... it was seeds the neighbor gave her... she is 4! We got her a plastic bag and marked it and she relinquished her seeds but I am sure she knows right where they are and will be pesting her father to get them started when the time comes!
