Carrots can be a challenge without careful preparation and attention after germination. Full sun is best in soil with pH above 6.0 to about 6.8. Well loosened
soil with plenty of organic matter allows good root development and moisture retention. Compost and dried leaves can be blended into the loose soil; removing
rocks and twigs ensure nice root development. Select the variety (length & qualities) for your soil nature.
Carrot seeds can be pre-soaked for up to six hours immediately before sowing. It can shorten germination period.
Seeds can be sown up to three weeks prior to last frost. Shallower (1/8") for earlier will allow some warming and deeper (to 1/2") if covering with plastic for warming or if soil is already warmed. Regular watering up to germination and several weeks after will provide best survival. Even a burlap cloth covering, soaked daily will increase germination. Thinning before the tops entwine should aim for 2-3", depending on the matter size.
Mulch with chopped straw, leaves and/or compost to conserve moisture and limit weeds. Water weekly or as required.
Harvest when tops have sized.
